SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The No. 21/21 Oklahoma State softball team outlasted Utah in a pitchers' duel, 2-1, on Friday night at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Oklahoma State improved to 23-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while Utah fell to 25-9 and 4-3 in the Big 12.
Friday's game featured a strong pitching matchup between OSU's Ruby Meylan and Utah's Hailey Maestretti, who both threw complete games. Meylan (13-6) earned the win for the Cowgirls, tossing her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed one earned run and struck out six. Maestretti (8-2) recorded her eighth complete game, allowing two earned runs and striking out three in the loss.
All three runs were scored in the third inning. The Pokes struck first after Amanda Hasler singled through the left side, which drove in two runs. Utah answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Kayla Lyon. Meylan struck out the following batter to get out of the jam.
Utah had multiple opportunities late but was unable to capitalize. In the fifth inning, a blooper into shallow right field led to Gabby Castillo throwing out a runner at home to preserve the lead for the Cowgirls. Utah put two runners on in the sixth but came away empty following a rundown between third base and home plate and a groundout to end the frame. The Utes also put two runners on with two outs in the final inning, but Meylan secured the win with a strikeout.
Junior Rosie Davis notched her 150th career hit with a base knock in the first inning.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT Saturday.
