Cowboy Baseball Victorious In Series Opener
April 03, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 19-11 overall and 4-6 in Big 12 play, while UC is now 21-11 and 4-6 in the league.
OSU's offense hit four home runs as Colin Brueggemann had his second-straight game with two homers while Kollin Ritchie and Evan Saunders joined with round-trippers in a pivotal fifth inning.
Jake Kennedy came out of the bullpen to earn the first win of his career with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, and Noah Wech notched his fifth save of the season by keeping the Bearcats off the scoreboard and striking out five over the final two frames.
Ethan Lund made his eighth start of the season and worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on two hits; he walked six and tallied eight strikeouts.
After Lund struck out five across two scoreless frames, Brueggemann provided the game's first runs with a two-run home run to right-center field. The blast was Brueggemann's third in his past two games.
Cincinnati answered back in the top of the third as Jack Natili delivered a three-run home run to give the Bearcats the lead. The Bearcats would homer twice more and strike for six runs over the next two innings to build their lead to 9-2.
The Cowboys got back in the game in the fifth inning on a pair of homers. Garrett Shull led off the inning with a triple off the center field wall and was brought home by Saunders' first home run of the season. The next two batters, Alex Conover and Brock Thompson, reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk to bring Ritchie to the plate. Ritchie then blasted his 18th home run of the season to cap off the five-run frame, making it a 9-7 game.
After finishing the fifth inning, Drew Blake returned to start the sixth but issued a walk to the leadoff batter. Kennedy took over, inheriting a runner on second base and facing the heart of the Bearcats' lineup. The righty forced a groundout to the nation's home run leader, Quinton Coats, which put a runner on third with one out, before striking out the next two batters to end the inning and the threat.
Kennedy returned for the seventh inning, where he pitched his second scoreless frame, striking out one.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cowboys loaded the bases with no outs on a single and back-to-back hit-by-pitches. With one out, Brueggemann hit a go-ahead grand slam to complete the comeback and give him consecutive games with multiple home runs.
Saunders added an RBI single to push the lead to 12-9 as the Pokes' second five-run rally of the game forced the Bearcats to use five pitchers in the inning.
Wech entered to open the eighth inning and struck out his first batter before putting two on base. He then hunkered down and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the frame.
In the ninth, Wech struck out the side in dominating fashion, securing the win for the Pokes.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 6 p.m.
