PHOENIX – Oklahoma State powered past 16th-ranked Arizona State Saturday night as the No. 25 Cowboys smashed seven home runs, four of those coming in the fourth inning, to record a series-clinching 13-6 win at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The victory marked the eighth straight in Big 12 play for the Pokes, who clinched their third consecutive conference series win. OSU is now 33-17 overall and 16-10 in league play, with the Sun Devils claiming identical marks.
Colin Brueggemann and Alex Conover both homered twice, and Brock Thompson, Aidan Meola and Danny Wallace also went deep. Brueggemann reached a pair of milestones, recording his 200th career hit and moving into OSU's top 10 with 49 career round-trippers, while Thompson extended his reached base safely streak to 43 games.
Making his fourth start of the season, Stormy Rhodes picked up the win to improve to 3-2. The righty worked five innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits; he induced three double-play groundouts and had a pair of strikeouts.
ASU took the game's initial lead in the second when Dominic Smaldino led off the bottom of the inning with a home run to right-center field, but Rhodes escaped further damage by getting his second-straight, inning-ending double play.
The Cowboys erased their deficit and went on top in the third. With a pair of runners in scoring position and two outs, Thompson blooped a double down the left-field line to plate a pair and put OSU up 2-1.
But another homer by Smaldino, this one a two-run shot to right, saw the Sun Devils regain the lead in the bottom of the frame.
The game would swing back in OSU's favor in the fourth as the Cowboys played their version of home run derby.
Brueggemann got things started with a two-run blast to center field to give the Pokes the lead. After an out, Conover and Thompson launched back-to-back jacks to extend the advantage, and Meola capped the inning with another two-run shot to cap the six-run frame and put OSU in front, 8-3.
ASU got back on the scoreboard in the seventh with a run off Noah Wech, but the Cowboy reliever recorded consecutive outs with the bases loaded to escape further damage and keep the score at 8-4.
The Cowboys added three insurance runs in the eighth as Wallace delivered his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center field, before back-to-back RBI singles by Meola and Campbell Smithwick pushed the lead to 11-4.
The home team added a pair of runs in their half of the eighth, but Brueggemann and Conover both hit solo homers in the ninth to seal the win.
Sunday's series finale is set for 3 p.m. (CDT).
