Cowboy Baseball Rallies To Knock Off No. 16 Arizona State
May 09, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
The win extended the 25th-ranked Cowboys' Big 12 winning streak to seven games as they improved to 32-17 overall and 15-10 in conference play. ASU fell to 33-16 and 16-9 in the league.
Campbell Smithwick's three-run home run to center field snapped a 6-6 tie in the ninth, and Mario Pesca closed out the Sun Devils in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.
Kollin Ritchie and Alex Conover led the Pokes with two hits apiece, while Garrett Shull smashed his 13th home run of the season.
Hudson Barrett earned the win in relief, improving to 5-1 on the season. The southpaw came out of the bullpen in the seventh and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out four in his two innings of work.
Pesca allowed a pair of hits in the ninth but struck out Dominic Smaldino with a pair of runners on to end the game and record his first save of the season.
OSU went on top early. Conover and Brock Thompson opened the game with walks, and Ritchie delivered an RBI single through the left side to put the Pokes up 1-0.
The Sun Devils erased their deficit in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two-out hits that OSU fielders lost in the sun. The first came on a double to shallow right field before a triple landed in right field and brought home a pair of runs. An infield single then made the score 3-1.
The Cowboys got a run back in the second as Shull led off the inning with a bomb over the wall in left field.
OSU tied the score in the third. After a leadoff walk to Ritchie, Aidan Meola was hit by a pitch, and a sacrifice bunt by Smithwick moved two runners into scoring position. The Cowboys took advantage when Deacon Pomeroy brought home a run on a groundout to knot things at 3-3.
The game then entered a pitchers' duel between starters Ethan Lund and Cole Carlon and remained tied until the eighth. But in that inning, ASU drew a leadoff walk before a sac bunt and a double put runners on second and third. Up next, Matt Polk delivered a two-RBI single to give the Sun Devils a 5-3 lead before a two-out hit later in the frame made it 6-3.
Down to its final two outs, OSU began its comeback with a one-out double from Colin Brueggemann. Pinch runner Brady Francisco then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of pinch hitter Avery Ortiz to cut the OSU deficit to 6-4.
With a runner on second and one out, Conover recorded an infield single to put Cowboys on the corners, and a sacrifice fly by Thompson made it a one-run game. After Ritchie was intentionally walked, Meola doubled off the wall in left field to plate the tying run.
That brought Smithwick to the plate, and the Cowboy catcher crushed an 0-1 pitch 417 feet over the center field wall for his eighth round-tripper of the season and a 9-6 OSU lead.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. (CDT).
