HUTCHINSON, Kan. - For the third time in the history of the Big 12 Championship, Oklahoma State's men's golf team finished as the event's runner-up, coming in four strokes behind Texas at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The Longhorns posted a closing 288 to finish at 859, 19-over par, at the par-70, 6,916-yard layout. OSU finished with a 286 tally during its third round to stand at 863 for the event, which was shortened to 54 holes after Tuesday's round was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Cowboys trailed the Longhorns by six shots entering the day, but chipped away at the lead throughout the round. OSU pulled within one shot down the stretch before eventually finishing four strokes back.
UT's Brandon Stone came away with medalist honors, finishing at even-par 210 after closing with a 73.
OSU had a pair of players earn top-10 finishes and with it a spot on the all-tournament team. Junior Talor Gooch finished alone in second place, while classmate Ian Davistied for fifth place.
The runner-up showing by Gooch was the eighth by a Cowboy in the event and OSU's third in the last four years.
Gooch closed with a 74 to finish at 213 and Davis' 71 gave him a 216 total.
Junior Kevin Dougherty carded his low round of the tournament with a 3-over 73 to move into a tie for 19th place at 223. Also in the group at 13-over was sophomore Patrick Winther, who posted a 79 during his third round.
Jordan Niebruggeposted the squad's low round of the tournament, firing a 68 on Wednesday. The Cowboy freshman got off to a slow start with consecutive bogeys on his first two holes, but steadied himself with a birdie at the fourth and another at the ninth to turn at 1-over 36.
Niebrugge carded three birdies against no bogeys on his inward nine to get in with his 2-under score for the day. His third-round score moved him up 20 spots into a tie for 23rd place at 224.
