Cowboys Roll In Victory Over Alabama
February 26, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad (10-1; 0-0 Big 12) extended its winning streak to six on Friday with a 4-0 win over Alabama (7-5; 0-0 SEC) in the first round of the Blue Gray Classic.
With the victory, the Cowboys remain undefeated against unranked opponents this season (4-0) and have now won four of their five matches away from the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"Not everyone played their best tennis today, but we all kept fighting the whole way which made it a lot easier for the the team to compete," sophomore Julian Cash said.
In doubles play, Temur Ismailov and Lucas Gerch got the Pokes started with a dominate 6-1 victory over Crimson Tide duo Grayson Goldin/Becker O'Shaughnessey to put Oklahoma State one doubles victory away from the point.
Shortly after, sophomores Lukas Finzelberg/Jurence Mendoza would drop their match on court three, 6-3, which put all eyes on court one for the doubles point.
All-Americans Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash led Alabama duo Korey Lovett/Mazen Osama 5-4 after the loss on court three, but with the momentum back in the Crimson Tide's hands they would square the match back up at five.
With all the pressure on Kadhe/Cash, they would deliver. The OSU duo went on to win the final two games of the match, which gave Oklahoma State the doubles point and a 1-0 edge heading into singles play.
"I thought the doubles point was tight, but Temur (Ismailov) and Lucas (Gerch) played really well and we picked it up to win the doubles point," junior Arjun Kadhe said.
The Pokes continue to have success in doubles this season by securing nine of the eleven points. They are undefeated when taking the doubles point (9-0).
Oklahoma State kept the momentum in their favor when singles play started, as four Cowboys took the first set in their respective matches.
The two-time All-American Kadhe extended the Cowboy lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory over Goldin on court three, 6-1, 6-3.
"I thought this was my best singles performance this semester, as I was hitting the ball clean and volleying with confidence," Kadhe said. "I was serving pretty well in singles and doubles too, but I'm just glad the team won."
Gerch would be the next Cowboy to claim victory in singles as he got his first win over a ranked-opponent this season with a straight-set win over Alabama's O'Shaughnessey, 6-2, 6-3.
With back-to-back victories in singles, the Pokes were in prime position as they needed one more point to clinch the match.
After coming back to win the first set 7-5, Cash took the second set against No. 93 Osama, 6-4, to give the Pokes their 10th win of the season.
"I'm really proud of the team effort today as we came through in a tough match and are looking forward to another big match tomorrow," Cash said.
In the second round, the Cowboys will face No. 14 South Florida at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available on bluegraytennis.com.
