STILLWATER – The 13th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team shut out No. 14 Kentucky, 4-0, Saturday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center to secure OSU's first trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships since 2008.
Saturday's win improved the Cowboys to 4-0 on the year and was also the 75th victory at Oklahoma State for head coach Jay Udwadia. Udwadia's 75 wins rank as the the third most by a head coach in program history, trailing only OSU coaching legends James Wadley and Myron Roderick.
"I really don't pay attention to any of that stuff, it was just great to get the team win today," Udwadia said. "We had one of the toughest regions and so I think our guys should feel good that we were able to beat two really good teams and I think that'll give us some more confidence as we move forward."
In doubles action, Oklahoma State found itself in tight matches on all three courts with some timely break points proving to make the difference as the Cowboys claimed the all-important point for a fourth straight match.
Lukas Finzelberg and Tristan Meraut provided the first win for the Cowboys on court three, winning a break point to drop Ryotaro Matsumura and Trey Yates, 6-3. Just seconds later, Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza clinched the point for OSU on court two as the pair of left-handers took down Gus Benson and Nils Ellefsen, 6-4.
The Cowboys, clinging to a one-point lead heading into singles play, powered through the first sets, claiming them on five of the six courts. Lucas Gerch was the first to do so as he cruised through both sets in a 6-1, 6-2, victory that doubled the OSU lead. Not to be outdone by his teammate, Arjun Kadhe soon followed Gerch with a win of his own on court three, besting Kentucky's Beck Pennington in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In front of a standing-room only crowd, Tristan Meraut supplied the winning point for Oklahoma State on court six as the Frenchman won nine of the final 11 games to claim his second dual victory of the year, 6-3, 6-2. The win was the fifth of the year for Meraut and the first time this season that he has provided the clinching point for the Cowboys.
"Tristan (Meraut) had a tough go of it yesterday, but I put him back in the lineup today and he won fairly easily today so that worked out to be a good switch," Udwadia said. "Gerch came out on fire in his match and those two guys really stepped up and made the difference for us in singles today."
Oklahoma State will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, as the Cowboys travel to the east coast to take on North Carolina State. That match is currently scheduled to be played at noon on February 5.
