STILLWATER - Mike Boynton and the Oklahoma State basketball team preached defense all offseason, and put that into action in a 78-47 route of Pepperdine on Friday night. Now the Cowboys turn their attention to a Charlotte squad that is coming off an impressive season-opening victory of their own, and features a dynamic guard in Jon Davis.
The matchup between the Cowboys and the 49ers will air on Fox Sports-Plus at 7 p.m. Central. Mike Wolfe, Bryndon Manzer and Allison Gappa will handle the on-air duties. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call from the historic white maple floor of GIA.
Boynton brought back an old Eddie Sutton tradition by having the word "Defense" printed across the back of the team's practice shorts. Through one game the Cowboys seem to have taken the message to heart. OSU held Pepperdine to 47 points and 28.3 percent shooting, which are the best marks by the Cowboys since early 2015-16 when they held UMKC to 43 points (Dec. 29, 2015) and Towson to 25.0 percent shooting (Nov. 19, 2015).
Coach Mark Price and the 49ers welcome back six letterwinners from a squad that finished 13-17 last season. Charlotte played seven games decided by five points or less after the turn of the New Year, including a 74-73 loss to UAB in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament.
In his third year at Charlotte, Price is an Enid, Okla. native and a 12-year NBA veteran. A 2005 inductee into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Price was a standout at Enid High School (which later named its arena in his honor) and went on to star at Georgia Tech. He was taken in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft and would earn four All-Star game appearances with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Price also played for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic before going into coaching. He spent seven years as an NBA assistant, including the final two with the Charlotte Hornets, before being named head coach of the Charlotte 49ers in 2015.
Davis, a junior, was named Preseason All-Conference USA in a vote by the league's 14 head coaches. The second-team All-C-USA guard finished second in the conference last year with 19.6 points per game, including 14 20-point scoring performances. What's more, Davis also finished sixth in C-USA with 4.2 assists per game. He is on the cusp of becoming just the 27th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, and needs just 11 points to reach that mark.
