A First Look at the Cowboys:
Oklahoma State enters its third season under head coach Steve Lutz following a 20-win campaign and a second consecutive postseason appearance.
The Cowboys have retooled with 10 newcomers, including the Big 12's top-ranked transfer portal class, according to On3, and a consensus top-10 high school signing class.
The six-man transfer class includes former UCF forward Jordan Burks, who averaged 13.3 points last season, and North Carolina guard Luka Bogavac, who led the Tar Heels with 52 three-pointers. Also joining the mix are former Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Kashie Natt and All-Freshman selection Jacob Walker, who earned the league's Sixth Man of the Year award at Sam Houston. Arizona State transfer Andrija Grbovic and 7-foot Georgetown transfer Julius Halaifonua add size and experience to the frontcourt.
OSU's four-man freshman class features McDonald's All-American Latrell Allmond and Oklahoma native Jalen Montonati, the son of former Cowboy standout Brian Montonati, along with guards Anthony Felesi and Parker Robinson.
Five Cowboys return from last season, led by fifth-year starters Kanye Clary and Parsa Fallah. Clary started 31 games, averaging 10.6 points and 4.6 assists while posting a 2.31 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Fallah, a 6-foot-10 forward, earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition after averaging 14.7 points and 6.0 rebounds. He is working his way back from a February knee injury that sidelined him for the final seven games.
Sophomores Ryan Crotty, Benjamin Ahmed and Mekhi Ragland round out the returning group after gaining valuable experience as true freshmen last season.
OSU got a head start on its preparations with a three-game exhibition tour of Puerto Rico in late July, posting victories of 94-88, 120-92 and 100-92 against local all-star squads.
Scouting New Mexico:
The Cowboys will face an early test against a New Mexico team that was picked to win the Mountain West Conference in Wednesday's preseason media poll.
The Lobos finished 26-11 last season under first-year head coach Eric Olen and advanced to the NIT semifinals for the first time since 1990.
New Mexico returns one of the Mountain West's top backcourts, led by sophomore Jake Hall, the conference's preseason player of the year. Hall averaged 16.4 points last season, earning Mountain West Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference honors. His 117 three-pointers set a New Mexico single-season record and rank fourth all-time among Division I freshmen.
Fellow sophomore Uriah Tenette also earned preseason all-conference recognition after averaging 10.6 points and 2.9 assists last season.
Sunday marks New Mexico's first basketball appearance in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The teams last met on Dec. 17, 2011, when the Lobos posted a 66-56 victory at the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City.
The exhibition is the first leg of a home-and-home preseason series that will continue next October in Albuquerque.
OSU in Exhibitions:
The Cowboys have won 57 consecutive preseason exhibition games inside Gallagher-Iba Arena, a streak dating to a Nov. 22, 1988 loss to the Soviet National Team.
Their most recent home exhibition was an 89-78 victory over SMU on Oct. 26, 2024, which marked OSU's first-ever exhibition against an NCAA Division I opponent. Bryce Thompson scored 24 points and made all five of his three-point attempts in the win.
The teams met again five months later in the second round of the NIT, with the Cowboys knocking off the top-seeded Mustangs on their home floor to advance to the quarterfinals.
Last October, OSU split a pair of road exhibitions against NCAA Division I competition, defeating eventual NIT champion Auburn, 97-95, in overtime before falling at SMU, 86-71.
