Â
Opening Tips:
- The Oklahoma State Cowboys are home for the first time in 10 days to take on the TCU Horned Frogs.
- After putting 99 points on No. 16 BYU, the Pokes struggled offensively during a two-game desert road swing that included losses at No. 1 Arizona and Arizona State.
- In Tuesday's 85-76 setback in Tempe, the Cowboys were within a point with less than four minutes to play before the hosts reeled off nine straight to take command.
- It was a similar script the last time OSU and TCU met -- a 68-65 Horned Frog win in Fort Worth. After OSU took a 65-58 lead with 4:13 left, TCU finished on a 10-0 run. David Punch scored the go-ahead basket with less than 10 seconds left, and the Cowboys missed two chances to tie or take the lead on their final possession.
- A four-game losing streak to TCU also includes last February's three-pointer buzzer beater in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs are looking to take back-to-back in Stillwater for the first time ever after rallying from a 17-point first-half deficit to win their 2024 visit.
- OSU leads the series, 29-16 (13-4 in Stillwater).
- With a win over TCU, the Cowboys (16-8) would match last year's victory total (17-18) and strengthen their case for an NCAA at-large bid.
- A key selection committee metric has the Pokes at 0.36 Wins Above Bubble, meaning the Cowboys would outperform the average "bubble team" faced with a similar schedule.
- The Arizona trip took a bite out of the season averages, but OSU still ranks among the top 30 nationally in scoring (84.4 ppg) with nine games of 90-or-more.
- The Cowboys are 16-0 this season when putting at least 81 points on the board but 0-8 otherwise. Opponents are averaging 80.8 per game.
- OSU has ridden the hot hand of Anthony Roy (17.7 ppg) for much of the season. The senior ranks among the top-25 in three-pointers by both quantity (18th, 3.33) and quality (23rd, .424).
- Senior forward Parsa Fallah (13.6 ppg) is the team's top rebounder at 6.2 per game and his .599 field goal percentage is the Big 12's second-highest among qualifiers (5.0+ FGM/game).
- Guards Kanye Clary (5.0 apg) and Jaylen Curry (4.3 apg) lead one the nation's most aggressive attacks (11th in KenPom adjusted tempo).
- The Cowboys (2-1 at home against AP top-25 teams) will continue their homestand Wednesday against No. 9 Kansas (8 p.m. CT).
Â
Last Time on Cowboy Basketball:
Feb. 10 in Tempe | Arizona St. 85, OSU 76
- OSU's postgame postmortem: Too many turnovers and not enough defensive rebounds.
- Arizona State outscored the Cowboys 24-4 on second-chances and 26-13 off takeaways, aided by a 17-11 turnover margin.
- Six Sun Devils scored in double-figures led by Massamba Diop (17) and Santiago Trouet (16 pts, 10 reb). The pair combined for 10 of ASU's 19 offensive boards.
- Anthony Roy and Parsa Fallah scored 16 points each to pace the Cowboys, who dropped to 0-3 all-time in Tempe. This was their first visit since 1996.
- OSU used a 16-3 run to erase an early 29-16 deficit. Roy's free throw tied the game at 32 with 2:34 to play in the half.
- The Cowboys tied it twice more in the second half but missed three potential go-ahead shots.
- Up 69-68 with less than 4:00 to play, the Sun Devils reeled off nine straight points to take control, then converted 9-of-10 free throws over the final minute-and-a-half.
- OSU shot 42.9% to ASU's 40.0%, but the Sun Devils had nine more attempts and a 28-20 edge at the foul line.
Â
ASU Leftovers:
- Guards Jaylen Curry (6) and Kanye Clary (5) totaled 11 assists against ASU. It was the eighth time this season that the pair have combined for double-digit dimes.
- Anthony Roy recorded his team-best 20th double-figure scoring game. Iowa State (7 on Jan. 24) is the only team that has held him to single-digits this season.
- After using 15 starting lineups in the first 17 games, Steve Lutz has opened each of the last six contests with the combo of Clary-Miller-Roy-C.Coleman-Fallah. They've made a total of eight starts together this season.
- OSU lost for the first time when outshooting its opponent. The Cowboys were previously 13-0 (24-4 Lutz era).
- Kanye Clary has posted more assists than turnovers in each of his last 21 games -- two shy of Doug Gottlieb's OSU record, set 27 years ago.
- Anthony Roy has made at least one three-point field goal in each of his last 20 contests -- now the eighth longest run in OSU history.
- OSU is 12-1 this season when leading at halftime (27-3 overall under Lutz). The lone loss came at TCU on Jan. 20.
- OSU is 12-0 this season (24-5 Lutz era) when out-rebounding the opposition.
- The Cowboys were outrebounded by lopsided margins in both games of their desert road swing -- 45-34 at ASU and 56-35 at UA. The latter was the most total boards by an OSU opponent since Jan. 20, 2018 when Oklahoma won the rebounding battle, 57-50, but lost the war (83-81).
- Saturday will mark 721 days since OSU's last overtime game. It's the Big 12's longest drought and one of the 10-longest in Division I basketball.
