Lubbock, Tex. ----- Leyton Hammonds recorded his first-career double-double in a 63-61 loss in overtime against Texas Tech in the United Supermarkets Arena on Wednesday.
Hammonds finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds as well as three steals.
Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation, but ended up needing five more minutes after finishing the first 40 minutes tied at 53.
The Cowboys were on the board first in the extra period after a Hammonds' layup, but a Devaugntah Williams' game-winning layup with less than a second remaining sealed the win for the Red Raiders.
After scoring 10 points on four-of-five shooting in the first, Jawun Evans did not play in the second half due to an apperent right-shoulder injury.
Oklahoma State led by eight at halftime, but a cold start to the second half allowed Texas Tech to make it 33-28 at the first media timeout of the second half with 15:52 remaining.
A Tavarius Shine steal and assist led to an easy Newberry layup to end the Cowboys shooting woes, and a Newberry's three the following possession made it 40-33 Oklahoma State with 11:51 left.
After holding a 42-40 lead at the less under-eight minute media timeout, a Newberry three off the Tyree Griffin assist extend the Cowboy lead to five late in the half.
The first half started slow for both teams, but a 7-0 Oklahoma State run helped give the Cowboys an eventual 10-6 lead the second media timeout with 11:42 remaining. Hammonds continue his streak of hot starts, scoring eight of the first 10 Cowboys points.
Evans' layup, followed by Anthony Allen's block that was followed by another Evans' layup made it 20-10 Oklahoma State three out of the timeout.
Oklahoma State eventually led 31-23 at halftime.
Aaron Ross led the way for Texas Tech with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Alongside Hammonds and Evans, the Cowboys had two others finish with double figures in the scoring column. Newberry finished with 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half, as well as four steals while Chris Olivier finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
