Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
• Oklahoma State (11-11, 2-7 Big 12) is coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss at Texas Tech on Wednesday, and returns to host its fourth consecutive top 20 opponent when No. 13/14 Iowa State (16-6, 5-4 Big 12) comes to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Cyclones have taken the last five meetings, but the last four games were decided by a total of 12 points and combined for four overtime sessions.
On the Air
• ESPN2 will have all the action between the Cowboys and Cyclones starting Saturday at 1 p.m. Central. Jon Sciambi and Fran Fraschilla will have the call. As always, the game can be heard on the Cowboy Radio Network with Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb.
Oklahoma State Snapshot
• Texas Tech's Devaugntah Williams hit a contested layup inside the final second of overtime to complete the Red Raiders' comeback over the Cowboys, 63-61, in Lubbock. Four of OSU's last five losses have now been by five points or less, including a four-point loss to No. 17/18 Baylor and a two-point loss to rival No. 2/2 Oklahoma.
• Jawun Evans is having one of the best all-around offensive seasons ever by an OSU point guard. He is one of just five players in school history to average at least 4.9 assists and 10.0 points per game, and Evans is the only one of those players to also pull down more than 4.0 rebounds per game. Evans is this season's only three-time winner of the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award. Evans has led the Cowboys in scoring, rebounding and assists in three of the last seven games, and four times this year. His 42-point outing against No. 2 Oklahoma is the third highest scoring performance in school history.
• The Cowboys field a solid defensive unit that ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring defense at 66.6 points per game. OSU is holding its opponents to 39.5 percent shooting, which leads the league and ranks 29th nationally. The Cowboys defense starts at the rim, where they rank third in the Big 12 with 4.5 blocked shots per game. The Cowboys have held their Big 12 opponents to 71.1 points and 41.8 percent shooting, which both rank third in the conference.
• The Jan. 19 victory over No. 3/3 Kansas gave the Cowboys a 66.7 all-time win percentage at home against opponents ranked in the Associated Press top three, which is the best in college basketball history according to ESPN.
• Senior Phil Forte injured his elbow in the first half of the win over Towson, which snapped his streak of consecutive games played at 102. The senior hadn't missed a single game in his career up to that point. Forte was a Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honoree, and needs just 55 three-pointers to tie Keiton Page (2008-12) for the school record. At the time, he ranked third in the Big 12 in career scoring and third in the country in career 3-pointers.
• Head coach Travis Ford ranks third in school history in both total wins (154) and win percentage (60.2 percent). Ford ranks behind only Eddie Sutton and Mr. Henry Iba in both categories, and recently picked up his 21st win over a ranked opponent with the victory over No. 3 KU.
Iowa State Snapshot
• Every Iowa State conversation starts with the dynamic duo of junior point guard Monte Morris and senior do-it-all forward Georges Niang. Morris leads the Big 12 in steals (2.05) and ranks second in assists (7.05), and his 51.6 field goal percentage has helped him rank seventh in the league in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Niang, an All-American as a junior in 2014-15, is second in the Big 12 only to OU's Buddy Hield in scoring (19.1), and is also top 10 in the conference in rebounding (6.1), field goal percentage (52.1 percent) and free throw percentage (83.3 percent). Niang was named a finalist for the Karl Malone Award this week.
• The Cyclones, who have won two straight Big 12 road games, are led by first-year head coach Steve Prohm, who ammassed a 104-29 record in four seasons at Murray State. He was the 2012 Basketball Times National Coach of the Year.
Inside the Iowa State Series
• The Cyclones have taken the last five meetings in the series, although the games have been nail-biters. A total of 12 points have decided the last four meetings, including a pair of overtime affairs that combined for four OT periods.
• OSU is 37-15 all-time in Stillwater against Iowa State, including a 4-2 mark in the Travis Ford era. Prior to taking the last two meetings inside Gallagher-Iba Arena, ISU hadn't won in Stillwater since 1988 - a span of 18 straight OSU wins.
• Overall, Oklahoma State leads the Iowa State series, 63-58. These two programs first met in 1927, with the Cyclones taking a 40-21 decision in Ames. This will be the 122nd meeting.
• The triple-overtime slugfest against the Cyclones on Feb. 3, 2014 in Stillwater is still tied for the third longest game in OSU history. Le'Bryan Nash posted 26 points and 10 rebounds and Markel Brown also recorded a double-double 19 points and 10 boards, but Iowa State's Monte Morris hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 43 seconds left in the third overtime to seal the game at 96-95.
An Oklahoma State Win Would ...
• Give the Cowboys two wins over ranked opponents at Gallagher-Iba Arena in the last three weeks. OSU took down No. 3/3 Kansas, 86-67, on Jan. 19, which was the 21st ranked win over the Travis Ford era at OSU.
• Snap Iowa State's five-game winning streak in the series, which includes a pair of wins in GIA. A win would give the Cowboys a 64-58 edge in the overall series, and a 38-15 mark in Stillwater against the Cyclones.
• Give the Cowboys an 8-4 record at home, and improve OSU to 12-11 overall and 3-7 in Big 12 play.
